“A DPRK diplomat in London is going through procedures to seek asylum in a third country,” the JoongAng Ilbo said. “The DPRK Embassy made belated attempts to figure out the diplomat’s whereabouts, but has failed.”

N. Korean General Defects Seeking Political Asylum

A general who was in charge of managing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s overseas slush funds is said to be in China after escaping from his country, and is seeking political asylum with two other North Koreans in a country other than South Korea. A source said that the three were separated from a diplomat from Pyongyang, who is seeking his own defection to another country.

North Korean diplomat runs away from Russia to Belarus

On July 1, the North Korean official (third secretary of the North Korean embassy in Moscow whose name is Kim Chol-sung- a potential translation of Ким Чхор Сен) left his office. However, his boss called the police only five days later. The apartment where the North Koreans were staying in turned to be empty, the telephone was switched off on July 2.

According to CCTV footage, he drove to Pulkovo Airport, where the diplomat, his wife and son bought Belavia tickets and flew to Minsk at 21:13.

In March, the North Korean leadership said the citizens should be prepared for the worst. The crisis is the result of UN Security Council sanctions against the country in response to Pyongyang’s testing a hydrogen bomb and launching long-range missiles.
